Ginger Bug Starter

July 31, 2019 (Last Updated: August 26, 2019)

Making a ginger bug starter is effortless and fun. The skin of fresh ginger is very populous in lactic acid bacteria and wild yeasts. When combined with sugar water and time, you’ll have a great starter for probiotic ginger ales, rootbeers, and more!

Things You Will Need:

  • Quart jar or small bowl
  • Coffee filter, cheesecloth, or hand towel
  • Rubber band (optional)
  • Fresh ginger (preferably organic)
  • Sugar
  • Non-chlorinated filtered water
  • Grater

Making Your Ginger Bug Starter

Day 1: Combine roughly 2 tablespoons of both grated ginger and sugar with 2 cups of water in a quart jar or small bowl.

Stir until the sugar has dissolved.

Cover the jar with a coffee filter and secure with a rubber band, or drape clean dish towel over the container. This will keep bugs and dust out.

Day 2: Add about 1 Tbsp each of the grated ginger and sugar and stir until the sugar has dissolved and cover again.

Days 3-5: Repeat step 2 for another 3-4 days or until the mixture has become nice and bubbly.

Now your ginger bug starter is ready to use for delicious probiotic ginger ales and other sodas.

If your ginger bug starter never gets bubbly, do not panic. Sometimes they don’t, but they will still work as a great starter for your probiotic drinks. The best way to ensure that it gets nice and fizzy (for your own confidence) is to use organic ginger.

Storing and Maintaining Your Ginger Bug Starter

Place an airtight lid on the jar or bowl you used to make it and store in the refrigerator.

Stir in about 1 Tbsp of each grated ginger and sugar roughly once per week to keep it happy and thriving.

After making several rounds of probiotic sodas, the volume of liquid may decrease. Replenishing it by adding a little more water is a good practice.

Enjoying probiotic sodas is a refreshing way to add beneficial probiotics to your diet. It’s time to make your own ginger bug starter so that you can enjoy these benefits for yourself.
